Premium Japanese Sencha blended with roasted rice and popped corn — a toasty, nutty green tea that is smooth, approachable, and unlike any cup you have tried before.
What is Genmaicha?
Genmaicha (pronounced gen-MY-cha) is a traditional Japanese green tea blended with roasted brown rice and popped corn kernels. The name translates roughly to "brown rice tea," and it has been enjoyed in Japan for centuries as an everyday, easy-drinking alternative to straight green tea. This version uses the finest Japanese Sencha leaves as its base — prized for their clean, vegetal character — which are then blended with the roasted rice to create a tea that is simultaneously earthy and fresh, toasty and light.
What does it taste like?
Genmaicha has a warm, nutty, toasty flavor with a gentle savory quality — think roasted grain with a clean green tea finish. The roasted rice softens the sharp grassy overtones that can make straight green tea challenging for some drinkers, resulting in a mellow, full-bodied cup that is easy to enjoy without any additions. It has a comforting, almost soup-like warmth that makes it especially satisfying in cooler months.
Does it contain caffeine?
Yes, but in lower amounts than most green teas. Because the Sencha leaves are blended with roasted rice — which contains no caffeine — the overall caffeine content per cup is diluted, typically ranging from 15–30mg. This makes Genmaicha one of the most gentle caffeinated teas available and a good choice for those who are caffeine-sensitive but still enjoy a warm cup.
How to brew
- Bring cold, filtered water to a boil, then allow it to cool for 2 minutes — target 160–170°F. Green teas are sensitive to heat; water that is too hot will produce a bitter, harsh cup.
- Use one rounded teaspoon of loose leaf tea per cup.
- Pour the cooled water over the leaves.
- Steep for 2 minutes only, then remove the leaves promptly.
- Enjoy as-is — no milk or sugar needed.
One 4 oz. tin yields approximately 40 cups of brewed tea.
The short steep time and lower water temperature are essential — they are what keep this tea mellow and smooth rather than sharp or bitter.

Why customers love it
The gateway green tea. The roasted rice softens the sharp, grassy notes that put many people off straight green tea. Genmaicha is consistently the green tea that converts non-green-tea drinkers — smooth, familiar, and never intimidating.
A genuinely unique flavor experience. No other tea tastes quite like Genmaicha. The combination of clean Sencha and warm roasted grain is savory, toasty, and deeply satisfying — a conversation piece in every tin.
Lower caffeine, all the ritual. With roughly half the caffeine of a standard green tea, Genmaicha is ideal for afternoon sipping, for those who are caffeine-sensitive, or for anyone who wants the comfort of a warm cup without the stimulation.
A favorite among Japanese tea enthusiasts worldwide. Genmaicha is one of the most widely consumed teas in Japan and has developed a devoted following globally among specialty tea lovers who appreciate its depth and accessibility in equal measure.
Visually distinctive in the tin. The mix of dark green Sencha leaves, golden roasted rice, and white popped corn kernels makes this one of the most visually striking teas on display — it sells itself at a glance.
